Step 7: All about backlinks

What are Backlinks?
Basically backlink is a link to your website on another web page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node. Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.

Why are they important?
Backlinks are important for a couple of reasons. For one thing, it will increase your traffic simply by having your link somewhere else for new traffic. More importantly, they improve your SEO immensely. The more good links you have to your site from reliable sites in good standing, the more important your site becomes. It improves your overall ranking on the search engines. Your ranking will determine where on the list of search results your site will fall when your topic is searched.

Quality of the links is very important, as some sites that google would consider "bad" can actually lower your ranking. You want your inbound links, or backlinks, to be from sites who's content is relevant to yours. The more relevant, the higher the ranking. You can find some more information on backlinks on webconfs.com, and their site is in my link list for reference. They have a great article on backlinks in more depth. See SEO Tools, this is an EXCELLENT site to learn everything about SEO, and what it does for you. I would suggest reading this site in its entirety to completely understand SEO.

"Search engines want websites to have a level playing field, and look for natural links built slowly over time. While it is fairly easy to manipulate links on a web page to try to achieve a higher ranking, it is a lot harder to influence a search engine with external backlinks from other websites. This is also a reason why backlinks factor in so highly into a search engine's algorithm. Lately, however, a search engine's criteria for quality inbound links has gotten even tougher, thanks to unscrupulous webmasters trying to achieve these inbound links by deceptive or sneaky techniques, such as with hidden links, or automatically generated pages whose sole purpose is to provide inbound links to websites. These pages are called link farms, and they are not only disregarded by search engines, but linking to a link farm could get your site banned entirely."

So the crux is DO NOT GET INVOLVED INTO FALSE PRACTICES. WORK HARD AND HAVE PATIENCE YOU WILL GET SURE RESULTS.

There is allot of talk about back linking and such, but basically, if you are honest about who you submit too, who you link to, and don't do things like try and link to everyone, buy traffic and other things that in my opinion "cheat" the whole process, you should be fine. Follow the rules. Be patient. You would rather see your backlinks develop over a period of time and allow your site to grow naturally, then have a fast starts that quickly fizzles, and leaves you a negative site
reputation.
